O ct 2 00 5 All the GIT quotients at once

Let T be an algebraic torus acting on a smooth variety V . We study the relationship between the various GIT quotients of V and the symplectic quotient of the cotangent bundle of V . 1 The general case Let V be a smooth algebraic variety over an arbitrary field k. We will assume that V is projective over affine, which means that the natural map V → SpecOV is projective. Let T be an algebraic to...

On the Diagonals of Projections in Matrix Algebras Over Von Neumann Algebras

ON THE DIAGONALS OF PROJECTIONS IN MATRIX ALGEBRAS OVER VON NEUMANN ALGEBRAS Soumyashant Nayak Richard V. Kadison The main focus of this dissertation is on exploring methods to characterize the diagonals of projections in matrix algebras over von Neumann algebras. This may be viewed as a non-commutative version of the generalized Pythagorean theorem and its converse (Carpenter’s Theorem) studie...

On the Application of the Borel-cantelli Lemma

The celebrated Borel-Cantelli lemma asserts that (A) If ~P(E,,) < 00, then P (lim sup Ek) =O; (B) If the events Es are independent and if xP(Ek) = m, then P(lim sup Eh) = 1. In intuitive language P(lim. sup &) is the probability that the events Eh occur “infinitely often” and will be denoted by P(Ek i.0.). This lemma is the basis of all theorems of the strong type in probability theory. Its app...

Smoothness Properties of Generalized Convex Functions

We present a concise and elementary proof of a theorem of Karlin and Studden concerning the smoothness properties of functions belonging to a generalized convexity cone. In [1, Chapter XI], Karlin and Studden showed that a function which is convex with respect to an extended complete Tchebycheff system has a continuous derivative of order n — 1, a fact which is of considerable importance in the...
